INCENSE

Choosing Incense for Your Space

A practical guide to incense formats, fragrance families, room size, holders and when a bulk pack makes sense.

Choosing Incense for Your Space

Choosing incense gets easier once you separate three questions: what format do you want, what kind of fragrance do you enjoy, and where are you going to burn it?

Sticks, cones and resins

Incense sticks are the easiest everyday option. They burn steadily, need a simple holder and are available in an enormous range of fragrances. Cones are compact and can give a stronger burst of fragrance. Loose resins and botanical incense are a more involved format and usually need specialist heat-safe equipment.

For a first purchase, sticks are the simplest place to start. Our Incense collection includes everyday packs, larger bulk formats and holders. If you prefer to browse a recognised brand range, see our HEM Incense collection or read the HEM incense guide. For regular use, the 500g Nag Champa bulk pack is a practical large-format option.

Think in fragrance families

WoodySandalwood-style, cedar and earthy blends tend to feel warm and grounded.
ResinousFrankincense, myrrh and Dragon’s Blood-style scents are often deeper, darker and more distinctive.
FloralRose, jasmine and similar fragrances can be softer or sweeter.
Fresh & aromaticHerbal, minty and citrus-led profiles usually feel lighter and brighter.

Match the strength to the room

A fragrance that works beautifully in a large living room may feel overwhelming in a small bedroom or study. Start with one stick, ventilate the room and see how the scent develops rather than assuming more smoke means a better result.

When does a bulk pack make sense?

If you already know a fragrance you enjoy and burn incense regularly, a 500g bulk pack can be considerably more practical than repeatedly buying small boxes. If you are experimenting, buy a smaller format first.

Do not forget the holder

The holder needs to suit the incense format, sit securely on a heat-resistant surface and catch ash safely. Decorative burners are useful only if they also work properly for the product you are burning. Compare the Hanging Brass Pentagram Burner with the Censer Incense Burner with Wooden Handle if you want two very different burner formats.

Burn safely: keep incense away from children, pets, curtains and other combustible materials; ventilate the room; and never leave burning incense unattended.

The simplest rule

Choose fragrance because you like the smell. Symbolic or traditional associations can add interest, but they are not a substitute for your own preference — especially when the incense is going to scent your home for the next hour.
